Willem Bastiaan Tholen made this drawing of various sailing ships using graphite on paper. Graphite, derived from the Greek word for 'to write,' is a form of carbon. Its softness allows it to leave marks on paper, a process of deposition rather than absorption. Tholen's sketch demonstrates how the material properties of graphite – its darkness and varying thickness – can capture light and form. The quick, energetic strokes suggest that the artist was keen to capture the fleeting movement of the boats and water. Graphite is also easily erasable, and this medium is ideal for studies such as this one. The directness and simplicity of the graphite medium allow for a kind of immediacy, a sense of being present with the artist as he observes the sailing ships. Appreciating the material qualities of graphite and the artist's skillful manipulation enriches our understanding and appreciation of this drawing. It reminds us that art is not just about subject matter, but also about the dialogue between the artist and their chosen materials.
