David Burliuk conjured these “Ukrainians” with an expressionistic approach. He used a textured surface, vivid colors, and geometric shapes to create a captivating image. The brushstrokes here are lively, each stroke seems to be a deliberate mark of energy. I can imagine Burliuk working on this canvas, perhaps outside, battling the elements. I imagine him layering the paint thick, with each application building a rich surface of visual depth. The geometric shapes add a sense of dynamism to the composition. I’m reminded of Kazimir Malevich's Suprematism, as well as the Italian Futurists. You can see how artists engage in a visual conversation, echoing and challenging each other across time and space. The painting celebrates Ukrainian identity, while also embracing the avant-garde spirit of early 20th-century art. It's a powerful reminder of how art can be both deeply personal and universally resonant.
