Rembrandt van Rijn created this drawing, Zacharias and the Angel, using pen and brown ink, and brown wash on paper. The drawing’s relatively modest materials reflect the immediacy of the work, probably a quickly rendered study. The artist’s hand is very evident in the spontaneous lines and freely applied washes, which lend a sense of drama to the scene. The translucency of the angel is achieved through the careful application of the brown wash. Rembrandt masterfully manipulates the ink to create areas of light and shadow, giving depth and volume to the figures. The rapid, calligraphic strokes give a sense of movement, especially in the angel’s wings. Although appearing effortless, the drawing shows Rembrandt’s skill in ink and wash techniques, honed through years of practice. Paying attention to the materials and methods used enhances our appreciation of Rembrandt’s artistic brilliance. It also reminds us that “high art” is also the product of craft and manual skill.
