Mathieu Lauweriks made this flower vase design with graphite on paper, probably in 1916. You can see him working it out, line by line, geometric figure by geometric figure. I can imagine Lauweriks carefully measuring and drawing these intersecting lines, trying to find the right balance between the form and function of the vase. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching someone work through a problem, seeing their thought process unfold on paper. It's like peeking inside their mind. Think about the other artists Lauweriks might have looked at for inspiration – other architects, designers, and maybe even some painters. How do their ideas and approaches resonate with his? Ultimately, this drawing reminds me that art is a conversation – a constant back-and-forth between artists, ideas, and time periods. It’s a process of exploration, discovery, and reinvention that never really ends.
