Curatorial notes

Maria Vos made this study, probably a still life, in the Netherlands sometime in the 19th century, using graphite on paper. Vos's work invites us to consider the changing social position of women artists in the Netherlands during this time. While still life painting had long been an accepted genre for women artists, Vos, like many of her contemporaries, sought formal training and professional recognition that had historically been reserved for men. How might her identity as a woman shape her artistic practice and the reception of her work by institutions like the Rijksmuseum? By examining archival materials, exhibition records, and contemporary reviews, we can gain a deeper understanding of the social and institutional contexts in which Vos operated. This kind of research allows us to understand the complex interplay between artistic expression and the social structures of the 19th century art world.
