Isaac Israels made this chalk drawing at an unknown date, it lives at the Rijksmuseum. It's a faint impression, like a memory barely there, of something, maybe a building, maybe a crowd. The chalk is so delicate, it's barely kissing the page. You can see the texture of the paper underneath, like a ghostly echo of the image. Israels isn't trying to hide the process; it's all right there, the hesitant lines, the smudges, the ghost of an idea taking shape. Look at the way the lines break apart, how the image seems to dissolve into the background. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbles, but with a hushed intimacy, the barest whisper of a drawing. Art isn't about perfection, or even clarity, it's about the process, the dance between the artist and the medium, the fleeting moment of connection.
