Nicolaas Lanckamp created this Barometer in the Netherlands, sometime between the late 17th and early 18th century. Looking at this object, it is easy to consider it as purely scientific, but what is also at play is the expression of power. The Dutch Republic was a major maritime power at this time, and accurate weather prediction was crucial for trade and naval operations. Adorning a barometer with heraldic symbols elevates it beyond a mere scientific tool. It becomes an emblem of authority, aligning the owner with the state's might. The elaborate ornamentation and gilded details further suggest it was commissioned for an elite member of society. By examining documents, such as guild records, estate inventories, and commissioning contracts, we can begin to reveal the economic conditions and social relations that gave rise to such objects. This approach helps to understand the meanings and values that were assigned to art in its own time.
