Aurelie Nemours made this painting called Rythme du millimètre, and, for me, it is all about process. I can picture her carefully placing each of those little squares one by one, a meditation in black and white. When I look closely, I notice the surface isn't perfectly smooth, the paint has a bit of texture, a slight bumpiness that catches the light. Each square has slightly different edges and a different density, like a little fingerprint or the evidence of the artist’s hand. These tiny squares create a grid, but they also break the grid, suggesting that even within the strictest rules, there is always room for freedom. Agnes Martin comes to mind, another artist who used grids to explore space and light. Nemours and Martin both show us that art is a form which embraces ambiguity. Each of us is invited to create our own rhythm.
