About this artwork

Elias Stark created this etching titled 'Landschap met sloot', or Landscape with Ditch, in 1887. Stark came of age during a time of great social change in the Netherlands. The rise of industrialization and urbanization led to a renewed interest in the Dutch landscape. Notice the intimate scale of the print. Stark's use of etching allows for fine lines and detailed textures which evoke a sense of closeness. It's as though we're invited to pause and reflect on the subtle beauty of the natural world. The rural landscape is idealized, but there is also an underlying sense of melancholy, as if aware of the changes that threaten the pastoral way of life. Stark captures the quiet dignity of the Dutch countryside. Ultimately, 'Landschap met sloot' asks us to consider our relationship to the land and our place within it. It also encourages us to consider the complex relationship between identity, place, and history.
