Louise Ravn-Hansen created this print of a drawbridge using etching, sometime between her birth in 1849 and death in 1909. The image presents a picturesque scene. It is a landscape with a man standing by a canal and the bridge that crosses it. Prints such as this, made in Denmark at the end of the 19th century, were produced as affordable art objects for middle-class homes. Ravn-Hansen was part of a generation of women artists who had gained access to formal art training, but who were still largely excluded from the established art market. Prints and etchings, in multiple editions, offered women artists a way to circumvent the traditional institutions and reach a wider audience. Ravn-Hansen used her skills in etching to create these serene and calming images of the Danish countryside that were popular at the time. We can use art journals and exhibition catalogues to learn more about the artistic marketplace of Ravn-Hansen's time.
