This is an engraving of a wall design with an oven and a herm, made by Wendel Dietterlin in the late 16th century. The composition strikes a balance between symmetry and asymmetry, playing with architectural and figurative elements. The subject matter explores ideas about the role of architecture, nature, and the body. Dietterlin's architectural fantasy contains complex symbolic meanings. Observe how classical motifs, such as Ceres with her cornucopia, are juxtaposed with grotesque figures and culinary elements, like the cook holding ducks. The structural framework is organized in distinct horizontal layers, each displaying a different set of motifs, from the mundane to the mythical. The texture and the detailed linear work give the engraving a tactile depth. Note that the engraving challenges the period's established aesthetic norms by questioning the relationship between form and function. By destabilizing traditional architectural values, Dietterlin's "Wand met een oven" becomes not just a design but a philosophical statement on art and life.
