Rose Freymuth-Frazier made this painting, Spring Dawn, with oil on canvas, but who knows exactly when, right? The way Rose has gone about the business of putting paint on the canvas, it's almost like she's trying to catch a feeling more than a specific scene. Look at the way the colors melt into each other – that hazy mix of pink, yellow, and green. Up close, you can see how she hasn't overworked the surface. There are visible brushstrokes, and you can feel the texture of the paint; it's all right there on the surface. It's like she's letting us in on the secret of how the painting came to be. I'm reminded of the landscape paintings of the Hudson River School, but with a looser, more personal touch.
