Yves Gaucher made Traces using acrylic on canvas, and looking at it, I imagine the artist carefully measuring and marking the canvas, and then meticulously filling in each segment with delicate colours, like pale yellows, blues, and browns. I can see him standing back, squinting, adjusting his vision. It’s almost like a musical score, or perhaps some kind of code? I wonder if Gaucher was thinking about how colours interact and create rhythms, like a minimalist composer might. What strikes me most is how the simplicity of the piece invites contemplation, offering a space for individual reflection. The conversation between artists, and the dialogue with the history of painting, is never-ending. It’s an ongoing process of experimentation and innovation. The openness of painting allows for multiple interpretations.
