Alevtyna Kakhidze created this untitled drawing using ink and coloured pencil. We see the figures of Joseph Brodsky and Alexander Pushkin joined at the hip as if two halves of one whole. The stark contrast between the black outlines and the splashes of red, yellow, and orange creates a visually arresting image, evoking a sense of tension and intrigue. The semiotic use of colour invites interpretation. Red highlights elements such as a cat, shoes and text, drawing our attention to their potential symbolic significance, while yellow is associated with the enlightenment. The drawing appears to challenge conventional representation, perhaps destabilizing established notions of Russian culture. This allows for a re-evaluation of historical and cultural narratives, as well as an acknowledgement of the complexities inherent in cultural identity. The phrase "Russian culture…for an alibi, it is not a killer!" challenges fixed meanings and invites re-interpretation. Ultimately, this artwork encourages us to question and expand our understanding of cultural narratives and their impact on society.
