Norman Rockwell painted this poignant image of a ‘Little Boy holding Chalk Board’ with oil, and you can see that he’s built up the image in many layers. There’s something deeply affecting in the boy’s sideways glance – I get the sense he’s trying to avoid our gaze somehow. Rockwell’s use of texture really invites you to linger. The boy’s woolly hat and the decorations strewn at his feet are treated with the same level of detail, creating a unified and intimate atmosphere. He really invites the viewer to step into this scene, maybe it’s a memory from our own childhood. The colour palette is quite restricted, mostly browns and reds, but there’s a glow emanating from the figure that really pulls you in. Rockwell’s work reminds me of someone like Fairfield Porter, who was also interested in these everyday scenes. Both artists invite us to find the sublime in the mundane. Ultimately this painting reminds us that art can be a vessel for our collective experiences, capturing the quiet moments that resonate across time.
