This Carte Postale was made with ink on paper, sometime in the early 20th century, and sent to Philip Zilcken. Look at this script, the way the words tumble onto the page with an almost frantic energy. Handwriting is always such a direct expression of the self. Think about the simple act of writing a letter or postcard—a very physical process of pressing a pen onto paper, forming shapes and lines that become words. In this card, the words themselves are transparent, revealing the thoughts and feelings of the sender. The message "heureux et pleins de santé" is a wish for happiness and health. The stamp is like a little painting, a pop of color that draws the eye. This card reminds me a little of Cy Twombly, who also used handwriting and text in his paintings. Art is always a conversation, a back-and-forth between artists across time.
