Editor: So, we’re looking at Alfred Freddy Krupa’s "Just in passing" from 1993. It's…a photograph, believe it or not. It has this wonderfully melancholy, dreamlike quality. A landscape sketch with all these birds taking flight. What leaps out at you when you see it? Curator: Well, isn't it evocative? The photo manages to capture the feel of something fleeting – the ephemeral nature of a sketch combined with the stark reality of monochrome. Do you feel that loneliness emanating from the figure there on the lower left? Editor: I do! Almost as if they’re observing the rest of the world…leaving them behind. There is a sense of loneliness! Curator: Absolutely, and notice the freedom suggested by the birds. They’re almost brushstrokes themselves, echoing the gesture of creation. It makes you wonder, doesn't it? Is this moment one of joy, sorrow, reflection or perhaps acceptance. A silent transition of one thing dissolving into the other Editor: It definitely makes you wonder! Is that maybe the photographer's own figure or silhouette? What’s the scale – does that enhance your read of it at all? Curator: A landscape format, if it were more panoramic, might have diluted the intensity and the isolation of the individual figure, don’t you think? The vertical composition seems to amplify the contrast between our solitary being and this kind of dynamic release. Almost feels…personal? What do you feel when you stand face-to-face with the picture? Editor: Definitely. Seeing how the artist focused on just capturing one figure versus trying to draw it at different angles adds to that sentiment of a melancholy-inspired piece. I can appreciate its unique composition of just capturing a glimpse of nature. Thanks for that added context. I definitely feel like I see it with new eyes. Curator: My pleasure. Hopefully, its elusive touch encourages your own reflective glances as you make your way home tonight too.
