This anonymous work, likely made shortly after the depicted events, visualizes the death of Count Willem IV in 1345. The stark monochromatic palette, achieved through engraving, throws the chaotic violence of battle into sharp relief. Notice how the composition is structured around dynamic diagonals. Swords and spears intersect, creating a web of aggression. The fallen figures, notably the Count himself at the bottom, are positioned to draw our eye through the carnage. The artist uses contrasting textures to differentiate between flesh, metal, and cloth, thus heightening the dramatic tension. What strikes one most is that it seems that the anonymous artist here is concerned less with historical accuracy, and more with the semiotic representation of death and defeat. The semiotic system is displayed through gestures, weapons and fallen bodies which collectively communicate a potent message about the consequences of warfare.
