Curatorial notes
Johan Michaël Schmidt Crans made this print in 1869. It addresses the separation of administrative and judicial authority on Java, then part of the Dutch East Indies. The cartoon depicts a Dutch administrator on the left, seemingly handing a document to a judge seated in the center, while a Javanese man stands to the right. This division of powers was intended to address corruption and inefficiency within the colonial administration, but, as this image suggests, it was also viewed as a way for the Dutch to maintain control over the local population. The image uses visual cues to establish a hierarchy, with the Dutch official taking the lead and the Javanese figure relegated to the margins. By understanding the political and institutional history of the Dutch East Indies, we can interpret the image's commentary on the social structures of its time. To further examine this, we could look at colonial archives and political records to better understand how this print engaged with the social and institutional context of the time.
