Editor: Here we have an untitled portrait of two nuns by John Deusing. It’s undated, but the print itself is quite small. I’m struck by the contrast between the figures and what looks like an architectural backdrop. What do you see in this piece? Curator: The formal elements immediately present themselves. Note the stark contrast, the manipulation of light and shadow. The composition is deliberately symmetrical, bisected by the verticality of the standing nun. The texture, though captured in monochrome, appears rich. Observe the folds of their habits and the rosary beads. Editor: So you see the interplay of shapes and textures as the primary focus? Curator: Precisely. The arrangement of forms, the balance, the interplay of light – these are the keys to unlocking its meaning. What do you make of the negative space? Editor: I hadn’t considered that. Now I notice how it frames the figures, adding to the composition's tension. Thanks!
