Hryhorii Havrylenko made this female image with pencil, and you can feel the artist working through the form, searching for the right lines. It’s almost like you can see the ghost of previous attempts, right? The texture of the paper is smooth, and the pencil marks vary in pressure, creating a subtle sense of depth and volume. Look at the way he’s used hatching to define the planes of her face, those short, parallel lines building up tone. I find that so interesting; it’s a very traditional technique, but there’s something so immediate and personal about the way Havrylenko uses it. I’m reminded of Lucien Freud’s drawings, especially in the way he captures the weight and solidity of the figure with such simple means. But while Freud is known for his psychological intensity, Havrylenko seems more interested in the pure act of observation. Ultimately, art is not just about what we see but how we see, constantly shifting and evolving.
