Curatorial notes

Reinier Vinkeles made this etching, “Ijspret buiten de stadsmuren,” which translates to Ice Fun outside the City Walls. Vinkeles lived during a time of political and social upheaval in the Netherlands. Looking at this winter scene, what is the relationship between pleasure and privilege? The artwork presents a vision of leisure, with figures skating and enjoying themselves on the ice. Yet, who has access to this leisure? The clothing and activities suggest a middle to upper-class demographic, pointing to class distinctions in the enjoyment of recreational activities. Consider, too, that the scene takes place "outside the city walls," perhaps indicating freedom from the constraints of urban life, a temporary escape from the social norms, and a suggestion of the rural-urban divide. As you reflect on this image, consider the historical and social context in which it was created, and how that context shapes our understanding of the artwork today.
