Curator: There’s an ethereal quality to this one. I keep wanting to say 'Madonna,' even without knowing the title. What about you? Editor: You're right, a certain sacred serenity does emanate. Formally, note the oval frame containing the tender scene: within it, this print, made between 1655 and 1672, by Pieter van Schuppen depicts a nursing Madonna and child. The light radiating from them almost bursts forth. Curator: Bursts forth! Yes, the luminosity is striking, isn’t it? I think it's the light contrasted with those soft gray tones, especially considering the engraving medium... How’d he get such a velvety feel? Editor: Through incredible control of the burin. Observe the density and direction of the engraved lines creating chiaroscuro, lending three-dimensionality and that aforementioned soft, almost sensual texture. Semiotically, the halo of light symbolizes holiness while grounding it in earthly beauty and humanistic emotion. Curator: Humanistic is spot on. It's very intimate, isn’t it? It pulls at you in this weird, tender way... Do you get a little...vulnerable feeling when you look at this? Like remembering being really small? Or is it just me? Editor: The artist utilizes the visual rhetoric of vulnerability exceptionally well here. The nude child and Maria's bare breast represent both physical dependency and divine love in Baroque aesthetics. Curator: Absolutely. You know, knowing a little more—particularly your semiotic reading, really makes me see the Baroque drama inherent in the light...It's a far more layered moment than first appears, the artist challenges us to connect divinity to the ordinary, but in an extraordinary visual dialogue. Editor: I agree; examining its formal components offers fresh appreciation for the delicate balance van Schuppen achieved. Its graceful artistry makes "Maria geeft het Christuskind de borst" far more memorable.
