Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing of a blossoming roof, likely without knowing exactly when it would find its way into the world. The ink strokes are so sparse and quick! You can really see the hand of the artist moving across the page, feeling the shapes of the flowers and branches. There’s something really compelling about the texture of the paper, how it interacts with the ink. The ink isn't trying to cover every inch, instead it's like it's dancing on the surface, creating these light and airy forms. Look at the flowers in the bottom left corner, see how each petal is just a few simple lines, but together they create a sense of depth and volume? It reminds me a little of some of Matisse's drawings actually, that same sense of capturing the essence of a form with just the bare minimum of marks. It’s like he's inviting us to fill in the gaps, to co-create the image with him. And that, to me, is what art is all about – not providing answers, but sparking a conversation.
