This piece, "Annotaties" by Willem Witsen, looks like it was made with ink on paper. I can imagine Witsen hunched over his table, methodically jotting down these notes. I wonder what he was thinking as his pen scratched across the page. Was he trying to capture fleeting thoughts, or was he meticulously planning something bigger? The writing reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbles, or even Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks. You know, those kinds of notes that are art and study at the same time. The repetition of words and numbers almost has a musical quality, like a strange little song. Each mark is like a brushstroke, building up a rhythm of intention and accident. It makes me think of other artists who use language in their work, like Ed Ruscha or Marcel Broodthaers. But Witsen’s notes feel more intimate, more like a private conversation with himself. It all reminds us that art is a dialogue across time and space, a way for us to connect with each other's minds and hearts through the ages.
