Gherasim Luca created this collage called Transpercer la transparence (7) using different transparent shapes on a decorated card. The colour palette is restrained, mostly whites and creams, with a decorative frame of cool blues, it’s very subtle and ethereal. Luca uses layered translucent vellum shapes to build a composition where each layer interacts to create new forms and spatial relationships. The process is quite playful, isn’t it? I like the card frame, it gives the piece a found and intimate quality, as if it might be a postcard. The geometric shapes are carefully arranged, creating a delicate balance between order and chaos. You could get lost in the superimposition of shapes and colours; in the subtle variations of light and shadow that define the image. The work reminds me of Kurt Schwitters, with its similarly delicate touch and repurposing of everyday materials, but Luca takes it somewhere else, into a more ethereal, otherworldly realm. Ultimately, the piece invites us to see beyond the surface, to embrace the beauty of impermanence, and to find meaning in the interplay of light, shadow, and form.
