Don Ivan Punchatz made this painting called Cowboy Heaven and Hell at some point in the late 20th century. I can see the artist wrestling with these two big ideas, heaven and hell, using fire and light and a cowboy riding a winged horse! I can almost feel the brushstrokes layering the paint, each one building this otherworldly scene. Punchatz, like so many of us, is trying to make sense of it all—the good, the bad, and the downright weird. The cowboy with his lasso of lightning feels like a figure from a dream, or a tall tale. He has this kind of glow, a lightness. Below him these tortured figures reach upwards, yearning, struggling with the heat, and a very different kind of gravity. It reminds me that we, as artists, are all grappling with our inner demons, with our hopes and fears. It is reassuring to remember that artists everywhere, throughout time, are in conversation, inspiring one another to keep pushing, keep exploring, keep searching for meaning in the chaos.
