This small print of Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace was made by Urban Janke sometime before his death in 1914. It's all these blocks of color, green, blue, orange and black... like he's carving out this very ordered park, one careful mark at a time. I can imagine Janke, maybe he's young, setting up his little studio, thinking about the light hitting the water in that fountain. See how he uses the blue to give it this shimmering, almost unreal quality? And those trees! They're so formal, but he gives them this wild, almost hairy texture. It reminds me of how Hodler used these rhythmic patterns, but Janke's got this folk art edge to it. There's this innocence, you know? Like he's just happy to be capturing this little corner of the world. It's a little gem, really.
