Curatorial notes
Théodore Tscharner created this print, "Oude vrouw met wandelstok op een kleine stenen brug", sometime during his lifetime, which spanned much of the 19th century. This print invites us to consider the life of an elderly woman, a figure often marginalized in broader society, who is depicted crossing a small stone bridge with the aid of a walking stick. During Tscharner’s time, class structures often dictated who had the privilege of being represented in art. This quiet scene offers a perspective outside those norms. The woman's solitary journey across the bridge becomes a metaphor for aging, resilience, and perhaps a quiet resistance to the invisibility often imposed on the elderly. Tscharner's choice to focus on such a figure prompts reflection on societal values and our own personal encounters with aging and mortality.
