Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst made this piece called ‘Organisatie’ with paint, pencil, and chalk. I love that this piece is unfinished; it makes the process so visible. Look closely at the palette, muted ochres and reds, thinly applied so that the pencil lines show through. You can see how the artist is working out the composition as he goes along, trying different things out, but also clearly following a meticulously laid plan. In the top left corner, the fan of gold feels particularly exciting, it stands out from the rest of the piece. Holst has also clearly looked at medieval art and design for inspiration, but he also puts his own stamp on it. This piece reminds me of Gustav Klimt, but a Klimt that's still in the workshop. Art is just one giant conversation, and this piece is part of that. Don’t be afraid to add your voice.
