John Flaxman crafted this sculpture called Cephalus and Aurora, using marble to depict a scene of mythological drama and emotion. The smooth, cool surface of the marble contrasts with the heated exchange captured in the figures’ poses and gestures. Notice how Flaxman used the principles of Neoclassical sculpture, where form is precisely rendered to portray idealised figures and moral narratives. This artwork portrays a moment of conflict and persuasion with the goddess Aurora attempting to seduce the mortal Cephalus. The lines of their bodies create a dynamic tension, from Cephalus pulling away, to Aurora’s embrace. The draping fabric adds movement to the composition, swirling around Aurora and caught by Cephalus. The overall effect is one of contained passion, where the cool detachment of the marble belies the emotional intensity of the scene. The sculpture challenges the viewer to consider themes of desire, resistance, and the complex interplay between mortals and immortals.
