Pietro Lorenzetti created "The Crucifixion" in the early 14th century using tempera and gold on wood. The stark image of Christ on the cross dominates, flanked by two other figures, their bodies contorted in agony. Consider the lance piercing the side of Christ – a motif of profound suffering, echoing the spears of Roman soldiers, yet also reminiscent of the life-giving waters flowing from the Tree of Life in ancient mythologies. This gesture, laden with pathos, reappears across time, from the Hellenistic depictions of wounded warriors to the martyred saints of the Middle Ages. The motif has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts, demonstrating a non-linear, cyclical progression of symbolic meaning. This poignant image engages us on a deep, subconscious level.
