Christen Købke made this study of horse-drawn carts using graphite on paper sometime in the first half of the 19th century. The immediacy of the medium, a simple pencil, allows for quick sketching and the capturing of fleeting moments. Look closely, and you'll see how Købke used line weight to suggest the forms of the carts and the animals pulling them. The texture of the paper itself adds another dimension, providing a subtle background for the artist's marks. What's interesting here is the subject matter: working vehicles, tools of labor. Købke elevates the everyday, finding beauty and interest in the objects that would have been essential to the Danish economy at the time. It reminds us that art doesn't always have to depict grand historical events or idealized scenes; it can also find meaning in the mundane realities of working life.
