This landscape was sketched in pencil by Johan Antonie de Jonge at some point during his lifetime. It looks like he was really trying to get something down quickly. The texture is super interesting to me; the marks all over the left page vary between short and dark, and long and light. This gives the impression of a breezy landscape. I love that the right page is blank apart from some notes and a quick sketch of something near the edge. I wonder, what was it that he wanted to remember about that specific thing? It reminds me of a Cy Twombly work, but instead of abstraction it’s a real place. It’s fascinating to think about how different artists can use similar marks and gestures to capture something completely different. It just goes to show that art is an ongoing conversation.
