This small bronze prize medal was made by Chris van der Hoef in 1922. I can imagine the artist's hands carefully carving away at the metal, each line and curve a deliberate decision. The act of physically shaping this medal must have been so satisfying, right? On one side, there's a detailed depiction of a building, almost like a miniature city frozen in time. And on the other side, text is precisely inscribed within an ornamental border. The texture is smooth and the lines crisp, so precise. I wonder what van der Hoef was thinking as he worked on this piece? Was he thinking about the people of Groningen and their traditions? About the importance of community and celebration? Or was he simply focused on the challenge of capturing such detail in such a small space? I love that these questions remain open. That’s how artists keep the conversation going.
