This silver medal, crafted by Thomas Simon, commemorates naval victories over the Dutch. On one side, armorial symbols dominate, emblems of power and lineage, acting as a kind of cultural shorthand for authority and triumph. Consider how the imagery of conflict and victory is not unique to this time. The naval battle depicted on the reverse evokes similar scenes found on ancient Roman coins, celebrating military conquests, or even earlier, in Mesopotamian reliefs detailing victorious campaigns. The armorial symbols—shields and crests—echo motifs used throughout the medieval period and persist even today. This continuity is fascinating. It reveals our persistent need to assert dominance and celebrate victories, mirroring a primal drive reflected across cultures. These are not simply images; they are emotional triggers embedded with cultural memory, designed to evoke feelings of pride, security, and perhaps, a subconscious reassurance of our place in the world.
