Carl Ernst Christoph Hess created this print, 'Adoration of the Shepherds', using etching techniques. The image is dominated by a stark contrast between light and shadow, a chiaroscuro effect which brings the central figures into sharp focus. The composition is organised within an arch, framing the scene and directing our gaze towards the illuminated infant. The intricate web of lines etched into the plate creates a rich texture that conveys depth and emotion. Notice how the artist uses the varying density of lines to model the figures and create a sense of volume. This precise, almost scientific, articulation of form is typical of Hess's approach. The subdued palette enhances the solemn atmosphere, drawing us into a contemplative space. Hess masterfully uses the formal elements of the print to invite us to reflect not just on the biblical narrative, but also on the artistic and philosophical currents of his time.
