Fernanda Suarez created this digital painting entitled 'Alice' sometime in the 21st century. Here, Alice is reimagined as a young woman of today, complete with tattoos and a branded beverage. The original Alice, written by Lewis Carroll in 1865, was a commentary on the rigid social structure of Victorian England and a critique of institutional norms of education and family life. Suarez's image uses the iconography of the original to create a contemporary commentary. Alice's ‘Mad Hatter Tea Co.’ drink and her tattoos suggest that rather than falling down a rabbit hole, Alice has fallen into consumer culture. The rose in her t-shirt pocket and the Cheshire cat reflection behind her suggest that she is aware of the absurdities of her situation. As historians, our task is to consider the original social and cultural context of Carroll’s Alice and the way that it has been reinterpreted to fit our own time.
