This book cover, created by J.-H. Dehou in 1872, commemorates Stroobant's jubilee, intertwined with the history of the Wijngaard society. At the bottom, a crown rises above laurel branches. The laurel, an emblem of triumph since Apollo's days, signals victory and prestige. We see it adorning Roman emperors and Renaissance heroes alike. Yet, in the context of the “Wijngaard”—the vineyard—its presence entwines worldly success with more ancient, fertile symbols. The crown also reminds us of leadership and authority. These symbols echo across time, shifting in meaning. Once purely pagan emblems of glory, they were assimilated into Christian iconography, representing spiritual victory and divine endorsement. Here, they speak to a layered narrative, of earthly and spiritual power. The collective memory embedded in these images engages us on a subconscious level, a powerful force. The laurel's cyclical journey reminds us that symbols are never static. They resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings, revealing the complex tapestry of human culture and its non-linear progress.
