Martiros Sarian conjured this ‘Fairy Tale’ with watercolor and pencil, its exact date lost in time. Look at the way he allows the watery paint to pool and bleed, creating soft, blurry edges. It’s like the scene is emerging from a mist, or perhaps dissolving back into one. You can almost feel him tilting the paper, coaxing the pigments to flow and mingle, embracing chance and improvisation. I love how the washes of brown, green, and blue evoke the feeling of a dreamlike landscape, with its gentle hills and otherworldly light. And that figure in the foreground, with her simple dress and wide-brimmed hat, accompanied by a red animal, adds a touch of mystery. Is she a traveler? A shepherdess? Or just a figment of our imagination? It reminds me of the work of Arthur Dove, in the way it captures the essence of a place, rather than its literal appearance. Like Dove, Sarian invites us to enter into his own personal vision and consider how artists speak to one another across time.
