Editor: We're looking at "Birds" by Utagawa Toyohiro, a delicate print on paper from the early 19th century. I am charmed by the light touch and simple composition. What catches your eye? Curator: The floating birds evoke a sense of freedom. I wonder if the basket represents a cage, or perhaps just a domestic scene from which they’ve escaped? Is the artist suggesting a longing for something more? Editor: I hadn't considered that darker reading! I was stuck on the beautiful details, like the little scattered bits of greenery. Curator: And don’t you think it’s beautiful how the artist uses so little to say so much? It really makes one reflect on nature’s simple beauty. Editor: Absolutely. I see it now. Curator: I learned something as well!
