This is a postcard to Jan Veth by August Allebé, the surface is a time capsule of ink and paper. The layering of ink and stamps tells a story. It's almost like Allebé is building up the surface, scratching into it, layering words like colors. Look at how the ink bleeds slightly into the paper, creating soft, blurred edges around the words. It reminds me that artmaking is about time, about leaving traces. Each mark, each stamp, is a record of a moment, a decision, an action. The stamps and handwriting give you an immediate sense of its history and journey. This reminds me a little of Cy Twombly's work. Both artists share a love for gesture, for letting the hand move freely across the surface. Like Twombly, there's a rawness and immediacy here. Art isn't just about perfection, it's about embracing the imperfect, the messy, the human.
