This is a postcard to Philip Zilcken by Simon Moulijn, its medium being ink on paper. It's got this ephemeral quality to it, like a fleeting thought captured in monochrome. The ink is applied in varying weights, from the crisp stamp markings to the fluid, almost hurried script of the address, the marks really bring to the surface the whole process of communication. Look at the smudges around the edges of the postmarks. They speak of time, touch, and the somewhat haphazard nature of human interaction. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbled canvases, where the act of writing becomes a kind of abstract expression. And that’s what makes art interesting, right? It's this ongoing conversation across time, where ideas get reinterpreted, mashed up, and spat out in new and unexpected ways. This postcard, with its simple message and unassuming materials, becomes a carrier of something much bigger.
