This anonymous drawing shows the castle of IJsselstein, its image rendered with delicate strokes of grey wash. Note the castle's position, dominating the landscape, a common motif in Northern European art. It’s not merely a building, but a symbol of power, security, and the feudal order, its roots entwined with ancient fortifications. From afar, the image of the Castle brings to mind a similar idea of centrality and control that we can see in the fortified acropolises of ancient Greece, such as the Acropolis of Athens. Consider how the castle, as an archetype, has evolved. Initially a stronghold, it becomes a center of courtly life, and then a romantic ruin. Yet, it always evokes a sense of longing and nostalgia for a bygone era, resonating within us through a collective memory of history and myth. It’s this recurring image that engages our minds on a deeper level, blending history with emotion. This image, the medieval castle, reappears in various forms across time, each era imbuing it with new significance while still echoing the past.
