This bulbous vase was crafted by Uetake Satoshi, sometime around now, and probably with clay and fire. Isn't it strange how the most basic materials can become so evocative? The surface of this vase is fascinating, it's got this dark, mottled quality that reminds me of volcanic rock, or maybe an old, weathered tree trunk. The texture looks almost porous, as if it could absorb moisture. And then there are these rhythmic, curved lines etched into the surface, like growth rings or the patterns left by water on sand. I love how the artist has embraced the inherent qualities of the clay, allowing its natural imperfections to become part of the piece. It makes me think of Lucie Rie, who was all about that. Ultimately, this vase isn’t just a functional object, it’s a testament to the beauty of the handmade, and the enduring appeal of simplicity.
