Charlotte Angus made this delicate drawing of a Pa. German Butter Mold sometime in the 20th century. I wonder, was she thinking about her own grandmother's kitchen, or the labor and love that goes into making something like this? The image is composed of subtle shades of brown and green that bring out the texture of the original mold. See how the cross-hatching at the bottom gives way to these elegant leaf shapes around the edge. I'm reminded of the work of other artists who take domestic objects as their subject matter, like the painter, Florine Stettheimer. Angus’s close observation makes you feel like you could just reach out and touch it. It's a reminder that we are all connected to the past through these objects and images.
