This is Robert Frank’s ‘Andraitx, Spain 2’ a monochrome photograph printed on paper. A strip of negatives really lays bare the process of image making. Look at the surface, the sprocket holes are all visible and the negative numbers are printed at the bottom. Frank has circled some of the frames he is interested in, a quick red pen mark like a painter might make on a canvas. He’s looking at the light as it hits the buildings, the composition, the feeling of a place. There is a beautiful image in the bottom row of a doorway, bathed in light. It feels like he’s looking for something, maybe a feeling, in the light and the shadows, in the architecture. Frank's work, like that of Garry Winogrand, is often seen as a precursor to the snapshot aesthetic. Both photographers changed the way photography was regarded as a medium. Photography is an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time.
