Mathieu Lauweriks made this design for a piece of jewelry, probably on paper with a pencil. You know, it's really all about the lines here - how they play together, create shapes, and suggest forms. I like how the material qualities of the sketch, the softness of the graphite, the gridded paper, give us a glimpse into Lauweriks process. Take for instance the scribbled cluster of lines that suggests the body of the jewelry, it's kind of a controlled chaos. The lines feel like they're searching, and the shading gives it volume, like he's feeling his way through the design. It’s a bit like automatic drawing, where you let your hand move and see what comes out. This piece reminds me a bit of Hilma af Klint's abstract drawings, especially in the way it mixes geometric precision with a more intuitive, almost spiritual approach to form. With this work, as with so much art, it's not about pinning down one meaning, but about opening up possibilities, embracing the questions.
