Jean Dubuffet made this print, Spectacle au sol, using lithography, a process where the artist draws on a stone or metal plate. I wonder what Dubuffet was thinking about when he made this. The all-over mottled surface makes me think of a well-worn pavement. It's a very earthy palette and the texture feels abraded, like the material of the streets. What I love about Dubuffet's work is how he saw the potential for art in everyday life. He looked at the world around him and transformed it. For me, this piece speaks to the idea that art doesn't always have to be grand or monumental, it can be found in the smallest details. I love this sense of artistic kinship across time. We build on what's come before, and the conversation continues.
