Giorgio Morandi made this landscape using watercolor, and right away, I get the feeling that he's making something from not much. There's a sort of quietness to the process here, like a meditation. The way the watercolor soaks into the paper gives it a kind of softness, a dream-like quality. The colors are muted, earthy – greens and browns that blend into each other. Nothing shouts, it all whispers. Look at that stand of trees on the left; the way the color bleeds at the edges suggests depth. It's a single, simple gesture, but it evokes a whole world. Morandi reminds me of Agnes Martin who was also interested in capturing the essence of an image with minimal elements. Both artists invite us to slow down, to really see the world around us, and to find beauty in the simplest of things. It's like they're reminding us that art, like life, is a process of unfolding, of discovering new possibilities with every step.
